New signs with the silhouette of bison in the Białowieża Forest!

New signs “Attention! Bison land!” appeared on the roads of the Białowieża Forest. This is a joint initiative of the Mammal Research Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences and WWF Poland, which funded the signs and stickers with the silhouette of a bison. The new signs have replaced similar ones placed in the Forest in 2010 in frame of the project LIFE “European bison conservation in the Białowieża Forest – Bison land”. Most of these signs disappeared, which may indicate their high atractivity.

The task of signs is to warn tourists and residents about the possibility of a collision with bison and other wildlife on the roads and to promote the Białowieża Forest as the Land of the bison. Białowieża Forest is inhabited by the largest in Poland and Europe population of European bison. Almost every year collisions of these animals with vehicles are recorded. Action of MRI PAS and WWF Poland aims to draw attention to the better protection of bison and the Białowieża Forest – the unique symbols of Polish wildlife.

Stickers with the silhouette of a bison are available in MRI PAS in Białowieża. We invite everyone!
