This 4-year project (1.07.2006-30.06.2010) was aimed at developing the scientific capabilities of Mammal Research Institute of Polish Academy of Sciences in Bialowieza (Poland) in biodiversity research and conservation. By employing in total twelve fellows from abroad (six professors and six post-docs for a total of 120 person-months) and transferring their knowledge to our staff and students, MRI succeeded at enriching biodiversity studies with up-to-date approaches of conservation genetics, ecological modelling, and GIS. The recruited fellows joined the on-going research projects, delivered a series of lectures, seminars, and short courses for our staff and students, and actively participated in long-term training of students.
During the project, seven scientists from MRI received training at the partner institution, University of Aberdeen in UK (for a total of 27 person-months).
The project contributed to the objectives of the ERA through increased mobility of researchers, identifying and strengthening the scientific excellence in Europe, and improving the coordination of national research activities and policies. It also addressed complementary goals of EU environmental policy: to protect biodiversity and disseminate knowledge on it.
