ConGen & ThermAdapt workshop at the MRI PAS: Evolutionary and physiological adaptation to climate induced environmental changes

The ConGen & ThermAdapt workshop, which is part of the Conservative Genetics and Thermal Adaptation programs, was hosted at the Mammal Research Institute from 29th June – 1st July 2009 and funded by the European Science Foundation. The presentations and discussions by the participants focused around issues of population genetics, phenotypic plasticity, experimental population genetics and also some methodological issues of data collection and analysis (see program). The challenge of linking the outcomes of genetic research with global warming was a key topic in the general discussions. In addition, the participants identified the need for a mechanism whereby the scientific community could advise politicians and decision makers in the area of environmental protection, with specific reference to genetics and global warming.

Besides actively engaging in the scientific discussion, the participants enjoyed an excursion to the Bialowieza National Park, and a celebratory bonfire party with local live music by Czeremszyna.
