Group description

The Evolutionary Ecology Group focuses on understanding the evolutionary processes underlying current ecological patterns. We study how mammals respond and adapt to changing environmental conditions and how various factors influence the distribution, abundance, and genetic variability of populations. Our research focuses on evolutionary and ecological processes in contemporary and historical mammal populations and extinct species. We are also interested in natural history and the question of how European ecosystems have changed under the influence of natural disturbances and human activity over the last few thousand years. In our research, we use a variety of field and laboratory methods, stable isotope and modern and fossil DNA analyses, radiocarbon dating, paleoclimate and paleoenvironmental reconstructions, and advanced statistical modeling. We apply the results of our research to issues related to the conservation and management of animal populations and forest ecosystems.
